The erstwhile Maternity Hospital, Puducherry was started in the year 1932 during the ex-french regime. In the beginning, it functioned as part of General Hospital, Puducherry. The main structure of Maternity Hospital, Puducherry was constructed in 1938. At that time, the total bed strength was 76. After that it has been gradually increased to 330 beds including New Born Nursery.

The erstwhile Maternity Hospital, Puducherry has served the Urban areas as well as the entire rural areas of Puducherry and it also covered the patients from neighbouring areas such as Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tindivanam, Thirukoviloor and Virudachalam of Tamil Nadu State.
